Soon new saints?

Pope Francis has recognized two miracles and several martyrs. Thus an important hurdle on the way to beatification and canonization has been taken for the corresponding events and persons.

In connection with canonization and beatification procedures, the pope has recognized two miracles and several martyrdoms. According to the Vatican on Wednesday, during a meeting with the head of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, Cardinal Angelo Amato, Francis also approved the establishment of the so-called heroic degree of virtue for eight people. These are important stages on the way to beatifications and canonizations.

A miracle attributed to the intercession of Blessed Alfonso Maria Fusco (1839-1910) – an Italian priest and founder of a religious order – and a miracle through the intercession of the Irish Jesuit priest John Sullivan (1861-1933) were recognized. Martyrdom was established for Franciscan and Archbishop Vincenc Prennushi (1885-1949) and 37 fellow Catholics killed for their faith by the communist government in Albania between 1945 and 1974.

Martyrdom was also recognized for four Spaniards, Benedictine Jose Anton Gomez (1878-1936) and three of his confreres, who gave their lives for their faith in the Spanish Civil War in 1936.

The heroic degree of virtue was awarded to three men and four women founders of religious orders, as well as to the Spaniard Maria Montserrat Grases Garcia of the Catholic lay organization Opus Dei. Among the religious is a Korean priest; he would be the second beatified clergyman of Korea. The heroic virtue grade expresses that a person has lived the Christian virtues of faith, hope and love in an exemplary way in his or her life.
